Book and visit Bodegas y Viñedos del Marqués de Vargas, in homage to Don Hilario de la Mata, who always wished to have his own winery and make a wine with the family name. D. Pelayo de la Mata. The winery, located in the centre of its own vineyard, following the château concept, is in the heart of the Ebro Valley, in an area popularly known as Los Tres Marqueses, because the vineyards of three renowned Rioja wineries, founded by the Marquises, are aligned here. A privileged location for vine growing due to its extreme continental climate with an Atlantic influence and a gentle topography of clay-limestone soils that allow the production of balanced red wines, especially suitable for barrel ageing, with body and high total acidity. The Marqués de Vargas vineyards cover an area of 50 hectares divided into 32 plots, which are vinified separately, planted with red grape varieties characteristic of Rioja such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano and Maturana. The vines are between 33 and 50 years old and are cultivated without the use of herbicides and pesticides.
