Wine getaway through the vineyards of La Rioja
La Rioja is one of the most famous regions for its high quality wines and winemaking tradition. If you are planning an oenological getaway in the coming months and want to immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience, there is no better place to do so than by visiting the vineyards in this northern part of the country. To begin your adventure, we recommend that you choose one of the region’s main cities as your base. You can stay in Logroño or Haro, although there are also countless smaller towns and villages with great cultural and heritage charm. If you end up choosing the capital, you’ll find the perfect starting point. The city has a large number of wineries and a lively nightlife. In addition, in the city centre you will find the famous Calle Laurel, known for its numerous tapas bars and the opportunity to taste the best wines of the region. From Logroño, you will find it easy to explore the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route, an impressive wine-growing area that encompasses the municipalities of Oyón, Laguardia and Elciego, among others. Here you’ll have the chance to visit centuries-old wineries, such as Bodegas Marqués de Riscal, designed by architect Frank Gehry, or Bodegas Ysios, known for its spectacular avant-garde design.
Another unmissable destination is Haro, known as the wine capital. Here you will find Bodegas Bilbaínas, a century-old building with the largest area of underground cellars in the region. In La Rioja Alta, you can also visit Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres and Bodegas Riojanas, where you will learn about the wine production process and taste its marvellous end products. As well as visiting vineyards in La Rioja, make the most of your wine getaway to enjoy the area’s natural landscapes. The region has a large number of trails and routes that will allow you to explore the vineyards and the beautiful surrounding landscapes. You can hike through the Sierra de Cebollera Nature Reserve or follow the Vía Verde del Oja, an old railway line converted into a hiking and cycling trail. Between excursions, don’t forget to try the delicious gastronomy of La Rioja. The region is famous for its traditional dishes such as Rioja-style potatoes, Rioja-style cod and vine-shook steak. A complete plan that combines landscape, culture and gastronomy to discover the land of wine, offering tourists everything they need in just a few kilometres.
